Information about German-American youth exchange, from aupair stays to school partnership with North America, allocation of scholarships as well as the responsible organisations.

Parliamentary Sponsorship Programme (PPP)

For scholars and young employed persons, the German Bundestag and the American Congress initiated 1983 the parliamentary sponsorship programme (PPP) which arranges an one year stay in the respective host country. The programme is run by different organisations.

School Partnerships with North America

The German-American Partnership Programme (GAPP) puts interested schools in touch with each other and supports long-term school partnerships in order to help promote German language teaching in schools abroad. The mutual meeting of school groups shall deepen language and general knowledge about life and culture of the respective partner. The stay takes three to four weeks.

Further information gives the Goethe Institute. German schools address their applications to the Goethe Institute in Germany; American schools to the Goethe Institute in New York.

Aupair in the United States

Together with German counterparts the exchange visitor programme of the U.S. Department of State arranges aupair stays in the USA. Information about the programme is available on the internetsite of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, instructions about the application for an Exchange Visitors Visa the American Embassy.

American Institutes

Information on youth exchanges, study, work experience and professional training in the USA is available from the American Embassy in Germany as well as the German-American Institutes in Freiburg, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Kiel, München, Nürnberg, Regensburg, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart und Tübingen. The institutions informs about general exchange programmes and keeps special partnership programmes with the corresponding institutions on location.

Latin America

With kulturweit the voluntary service of the Federal Foreign Office young people from Germany can undertake varied tasks – from homework supervision in a German school abroad to cooperation in a branch office of the German Academic Exchange Service – for six or twelve month in the countries of Latin America. All volunteers are attended and financially secured by the Federal Foreign Office.
