Music is a way of expressing moods and feelings which is understood all over the world.
The following pages list information about several activities in and outside Germany, about the support available for guest appearances for German musicians abroad and for foreign musicians in Germany, about touring and participating in international competitions and about further studies in the sector of music.
In the fields of choirs, amateur and youth ensembles as well as new talent the Goethe-Institute promotes the representation of German music abroad and exchange programmes with other countries by means of the following
guest performance tours and exchange schemes
participation in international music competitions abroad,
music-related educational projects in developing and transition countries,
guest performance tours in Germany by music ensembles from developing and transition countries,
information tours and further training courses in Germany for foreign musicians,
international youth exchange programmes in the field of music, under the auspices of the Kinder- und Jugendplan des Bundes (Child and Youth Plan of the Federation).
Furthermore the Musik II section is also in charge of organising the annual auditions for the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) in cooperation with the German Music Council.
German ensembles and/or the German partners of foreign ensembles can submit applications for the promotion and funding of guest tours and exchange projects to the "Musik II" section at the Goethe-Institut at any time. The applications as a rule should be submitted at least 6 months before the start of a project.

The music projects organised by the Goethe-Institute abroad on a professional level involve the design of the project, the commissioning of the artists and the organising of events like individual concerts, tours, master classes, workshops and symposia in almost every genre. This includes chamber music, vocal music (both solo artists and vocal ensembles), chamber opera, jazz, pop, electronic music and multi-media events. Large-scale shows and performances such as symphony concerts and operas are staged with the help of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With the help of a voluntary advisory committee for artistic questions the section at Goethe-Institute headquarters sees to the specialist needs of the institutes abroad. This enables programme planning to be geared to the local conditions. The institutes abroad work in close contact with German diplomatic missions and bi-national cultural societies.
Professional German musicians and ensembles can apply to work on a project with the Goethe-Institute by submitting details about the development of their career, information about themselves/the ensemble and one of their latest recordings (CD/MC). The chances of them taking part in a project will then be discussed at one the advisory committee meetings that take place twice a year. The members of this committee are renowned experts who support the Goethe-Institute in an advisory capacity and on a voluntary basis. On receipt of the information you will be sent an intermediate reply notifying you of the date of the meeting. A few weeks after the meeting you will then be informed of the results.

The Goethe-Institute supports ensembles from developing and transition countries for their tour of Germany whose economic situation prevents them from paying the costs of international travel themselves.
These tour visits are to serve the following purposes:
the promotion of a global dialogue of cultures and the development of intercultural competence,
the promotion of an independent cultural sector in developing countries,
the integration of minorities in the international cultural dialogue.
Projects involving both professional ensembles and artists, amateur and youth ensembles as well as new talent can be funded.
