Music

Music is a way of expressing moods and feelings which is understood all over the world.

The following pages list information about several activities in and outside Germany, about the support available for guest appearances for German musicians abroad and for foreign musicians in Germany, about touring and participating in international competitions and about further studies in the sector of music.

Support for German Musicians and Ensembles

Music Projects Involving Choirs, Amateur and Youth Ensembles as well as New Talent

In the fields of choirs, amateur and youth ensembles as well as new talent the Goethe-Institute promotes the representation of German music abroad and exchange programmes with other countries by means of the following

guest performance tours and exchange schemes

participation in international music competitions abroad,

music-related educational projects in developing and transition countries,

guest performance tours in Germany by music ensembles from developing and transition countries,

information tours and further training courses in Germany for foreign musicians,

international youth exchange programmes in the field of music, under the auspices of the Kinder- und Jugendplan des Bundes (Child and Youth Plan of the Federation).

Furthermore the Musik II section is also in charge of organising the annual auditions for the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) in cooperation with the German Music Council.

German ensembles and/or the German partners of foreign ensembles can submit applications for the promotion and funding of guest tours and exchange projects to the "Musik II" section at the Goethe-Institut at any time. The applications as a rule should be submitted at least 6 months before the start of a project.

Concert Tours of Professional German Musicians and Orchestras in Foreign Countries

The music projects organised by the Goethe-Institute abroad on a professional level involve the design of the project, the commissioning of the artists and the organising of events like individual concerts, tours, master classes, workshops and symposia in almost every genre. This includes chamber music, vocal music (both solo artists and vocal ensembles), chamber opera, jazz, pop, electronic music and multi-media events. Large-scale shows and performances such as symphony concerts and operas are staged with the help of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With the help of a voluntary advisory committee for artistic questions the section at Goethe-Institute headquarters sees to the specialist needs of the institutes abroad. This enables programme planning to be geared to the local conditions. The institutes abroad work in close contact with German diplomatic missions and bi-national cultural societies.

Professional German musicians and ensembles can apply to work on a project with the Goethe-Institute by submitting details about the development of their career, information about themselves/the ensemble and one of their latest recordings (CD/MC). The chances of them taking part in a project will then be discussed at one the advisory committee meetings that take place twice a year. The members of this committee are renowned experts who support the Goethe-Institute in an advisory capacity and on a voluntary basis. On receipt of the information you will be sent an intermediate reply notifying you of the date of the meeting. A few weeks after the meeting you will then be informed of the results.

Composers may apply to spend a period at the German Academy Villa Massimo (website in German) in Rome. Inspired by their surroundings, they will have the opportunity to develop their creative work. Composers stay in Rome for between six and twelve months. Applications should be made to the Ministries of Culture in the relevant Bundesland, candidates are selected every two years.

Similar residencies are also available in the Cité Internationale des Arts (website in French and English) in Paris. The Ministries of Culture in the individual Bundesländer also conduct the selection for Paris and Oslo.

Further Study Abroad for Musicians

For particularly well-qualified German students, post-graduate and post-doctoral scholarships in special-field of music the DAAD offers a number of scholarships and grants for study abroad (website in German).

Lectureship

The DAAD arranges and supports long- and short-stay programmes available for German scientists who would like to teach in higher education abroad (website in German).

Support for Musicians and Ensembles from Abroad

Guest Appearances in Germany by Foreign Ensembles

The Goethe-Institute supports ensembles from developing and transition countries for their tour of Germany whose economic situation prevents them from paying the costs of international travel themselves.

These tour visits are to serve the following purposes:

the promotion of a global dialogue of cultures and the development of intercultural competence,

the promotion of an independent cultural sector in developing countries,

the integration of minorities in the international cultural dialogue.

Projects involving both professional ensembles and artists, amateur and youth ensembles as well as new talent can be funded.

The Presentation of Foreign Musicians and Ensembles in Germany

Music from abroad is an integral part of cultural life in Germany. On behalf of the German Government

the Goethe-Institute supports with its Goethe-Forum in Munich (website in German) the dialogue with other cultures and presents, for example, the cultural work of Goethe-Institutes abroad. The programme also includes information on musical events, dance and theatre.

The Houses of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) in Berlin covering all genres of the arts today: music, dance, theatre, the visual arts, film and literature.

Requests of promotion for concert trips of foreign artists to Germany are presented at the Goethe-Institute by the German organiser.

Funding Programmes for Musicians and Artists

The DAAD promotes with following programmes for musicians and artists free artistic development. For a certain period of time their life and work at appointed places is supported.

The Berlin Artists-in-Residence programme (Berliner Künstlerprogramm) is one of the most renowned international programs offering grants to artists in the fields of visual arts, literature, music and film. Each year, some 20 grants are awarded to international artists for approximately a one-year stay in Berlin.

The Künstlerhäuser Worpswede see themselves as a place of international encounter. They aim to promote professional artists in the fields of the fine and visual arts, literature and music by awarding residential grants. They also support the projects of the funded artists and present these to the public.

The Akademie Schloss Solitude promotes and funds 50 to 60 award holders once every two years from the fields of fine/visual arts and performing arts, architecture, music, literature, design, film/video, and theatre to complete their own project over a period lasting from six to twelve months.

Each year, the Hertie Scholarship Programme makes ten scholarships each lasting one year available to members of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra who come from countries in Eastern and Central Europe. The scholarship serves to provide financial support for musical training at a university or a college.

The Hezekiah Wardwell Fellowships awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation enable young, highly-gifted Spanish musicians and musicologists for further training or advanced studies in Germany. Applications can be filed for a single extension of one or two further academic semesters.

Information on relevant programmes as well as on living and studying in Germany may be obtained through Support for Students from Abroad and through Support for Academics from Abroad.

Fellowships

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation every year grants the 'Hezekiah Wardwell-fellowships' up to ten young, highly qualified Spanish musicians and musicologists for further training or advanced studies.

Information Material

German Music Information Centre (MIZ)

The German Music Information Centre (website in German) provides information on all aspects of musical life in Germany, e.g. music education, amateur music making, music promotion and funding, orchestras, music theatres and festivals, research and documentation, music in the media and music economy. The Centre cooperates with information centres and music institutions on the local, state and federal level in order to develop and maintain its services. It publishes databases on music life in Germany with articles, music-statistical data, cultural-political documents, surveys and information on the infrastructure of musical life.

Libraries for Music History

Alongside the music department (website in German) of the scientific libraries in Germany the German History Institute in Rom (DHI; website in German) offers a section for music history. Its library possesses amongst others 50.000 books and notes as well as rare libretto prints. Unfortunately the library is not connected with the international loan system.
