Dance is one of the oldest manifestations of human culture and from time immemorial has been a way for different peoples to discover and express their own identity. Thus dance is also an ideal way for us to learn about other cultures and to come to understand them.
Dance in the Federal Republic of Germany is presented abroad by the Goethe-Institutes. The dance and theatre section of Goethe-Institute's central administration is the contact point, the mediator and co-ordinator for the network of regionally organised institutes abroad. The dance and theatre section decides on tours and support for artists and ensembles, with the selection - apart from their relevance to the German language and German culture - being based on the following criteria:
• artistic quality and professionalism
• innovation
• creativity
• interdisciplinarity
• lasting quality
On this basis the Goethe-Institut sends dance and theatre groups on tours abroad. In addition, it sends guest directors and guest choreographers abroad and assists local projects abroad through planning and financial support, while the dialogue between different cultures is further encouraged by wide-ranging accompanying events - workshops, expert discussions, exhibitions, film events etc.
In addition, there is a variety of multimedia information sources for dance and theatre including the theatre videothek, the theatre library and the TeleTanzJournal [TeleDanceJournal], providing information on the latest artistic developments and trends in the German-speaking dance and theatre world.
The dance and theatre section of the Goethe-Institut is advised by a committee consisting of eleven renowned experts from the German theatre world, namely managers, directors, critics, and scientists.

Tours and exchange projects of German amateurs, students of drama and/or dance can also be subsidised by the Goethe Institute, including projects run by related educational institutions and young professionals in these fields. The decisive criteria for the projects receiving funds are above-average artistic quality, even of amateur performances, and relevance to German cultural policies.
Applications for subsidies may be submitted by the companies themselves, or by the cultural institutions abroad which want to host them, to:

The Goethe Institute is responsible for co-ordinating guest performances/tours of professional theatre and dance ensembles from development and transformation countries (Central, South and East Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America) in Germany.
The selection criteria are artistic quality and the reputation the ensembles enjoy in their home countries/regions as well as the response they are likely to meet with in Germany. Performances in several places in Germany are desirable. In general, the GI grants travel allowances and transport subsidies.
Applications for subsidies may be submitted by German organisers to:

Interns—young performing artists—from Africa, Asia, Latin America and East Europe are placed at German theatres by the Zentrum Bundesrepublik Deutschland (German Federal Centre) of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in co-operation with Goethe Institute.
Internship periods generally run for three months. Scholars should not be older than forty and possess a good command of German. Internships are granted primarily to ‘multiplicators’ who will pass on their new knowledge and skills in their home countries (i.e. directors, choreographers and set designers).
Application forms are available from regional Goethe Institutes or from the national centres of ITI.
Dance and theatre from abroad are an integral part of cultural life in Germany. We have, therefore, only listed the institutions which, on behalf of the German Government, support dance from outside Europe and from Central and Eastern Europe.
The Goethe-Institut, Munich
With its Goethe Forum in Munich (website in German), the Goethe Institute would like to facilitate the dialogue with other cultures and to present, for example, the cultural work of Goethe Institutes abroad. The programme which is available online, also includes dance and theatre events.
The "Haus der Kulturen der Welt" ('House of World Cultures'), Berlin
The HKW is a forum for dialogue with the cultures of Africa, Asia and Latin America - covering all genres of contemporary art as well as dance and theatre. The programme of the HKW is available online.
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers a number of scholarships and grants for particularly well-qualified German students to study abroad. Scholarships last for one academic year only and cannot be extended. Scholarship holders must matriculate at a recognised college or equivalent institution. The scheme cannot support private study.
In collaboration with the Goethe Institute the Zentrum Bundesrepublik Deutschland des Internationalen Theaterinstituts (ITI) can make arrangements for young dancers and choreographers from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe to observe dance in German theatres for a period of between 3 and 6 months.
Scholarship holders should not be more than 40 years old and speak a good German. Candidates will be preferred, who already teach and who will be able to pass on their experience after their return home. Application forms are available from Goethe Institutes or from the national centres of the ITI.
A comprehensive listing of other avenues of support for further study is available under Study and Academic.
