German students are eligible for financial support for study abroad if such study would be beneficial at this stage in a student’s career, and as long as at least part of the study carried out abroad would be counted towards their degree at home. ERASMUS as a sectoral programme within the framework of the EU-education programme on lifelong learning concerns itself with higher education. It supports:
study terms at European universities outside Germany
students' placements at related institutions of higher education, centres of scientific research or enterprises in Europe.
Students interested in taking a study term at a European university outside Germany respectively a students' placement should apply directly at the European university, they wish to study at. For further information on application modalities please consult one of the International Offices of your German university (website in German).
The FREE-MOVER-Programm of the German Academic Exchange Service provides students the opportunity to take a study term at European universities outside Germany not taking part in the ERASMUS-Programme.
Applications for the Free-Mover-Programme should be adressed directly to the German Academic Exchange Service: DAAD-internetportal (for further information about application modalities see also the "Leitfaden zur Antragsstellung im Programm FREE MOVER", in German).
Applicants in all subject areas are eligible for scholarships for either a semester or a year. All applicants must be in at least their third semester of study when they apply.
The DAAD has online a Search Engine for Study Abroad, with information on possible courses abroad, entrance requirements, degrees and possible sources of financial support as well as practical advice on studying abroad.
Furthermore it has compiled an overview of language courses in other European countries.
As a rule support is only available for placements within Europe, unless the parent institution or examining body confirms that a placement outside Europe would be particularly beneficial at this point in the student’s degree. The placement should last at least three months. Further information is available from the DAAD.
There are numerous programmes with different partner countries, with a variety of requirements and lengths of duration. These scholarships (including the traineeships run by the international exchange organisation IAESTE) are listed in one data bank. These schemes are mediated by the DAAD.
The German Committee of the IAESTE places salaried and assisted practicals for students of the natural sciences, the engineering sciences and agriculture and forestry. The Carlo Schmid Programme, initiated in 2001, offers interested, highly-qualified students and postgraduates the opportunity to get insight into the workings of an international administration. (Cooperation between DAAD und Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes).
The programme International Understanding at School of the Robert Bosch Foundation offers for students and graduates the possibility of placement at schools in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Ukraine, Byelorussia, Russian Federation, Georgia, Romania and Hungary for a couple of month. The student apprentices sit in on lectures, gain experience, get to know the other country and its pupils and initiate projects stimulating intercultural learning.
are offered by the InWEnt ltd. (website in German) to students at German specialized colleges, in the fields of economics and technical/applied sciences, who have completed at least three semesters of study and six months of work experience. Students in international courses of study are eligible only under certain circumstances.
ASA - the European network for development education
The ASA-Program and its partners organize three-month work and study stays for young people from Germany and other European countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South Eastern Europe. It promotes exchange and learning about our One World through personal experience. ASA offers together with its partners of the Global Education Network of Young Europeans, GLEN,
training for the young European participants and a scholarship for the stay including insurance and a travel allowance.

US-Interns is a transatlantic exchange program. The program finds 8-12 week (up to 6 months) internships for students at American and German universities in the respective host country. Special attention is given to matching the individual qualifications of the participants with the expectations and demands of the employer.

The Pedagogic Exchange Service (PAD) of the Conference of Ministers of Culture within the EU-framework programme on lifelong learning serves as a National Agency in the field of school-education. In order to be admitted to the Studienstiftung applicants have to be officially nominated, they cannot apply. Most of the scholarship programmes are study abroad programmes designed for graduates, the exceptions are the China Scholarship Programme and the Scholarship Programmes "Metropolises in Eastern Europe", which are open for undergraduates wishing to experience a foreign culture alongside academic studies.
