Information for German Students

The support programmes that are presented at this page are addressed to students planning a long time stay abroad. The listed institutions and foundation award scholarships to students and scientists.

Support for Studies Abroad

Support of the DAAD

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has online a Search Engine for Study Abroad, with information on possible courses abroad, entrance requirements, degrees and possible sources of financial support as well as practical advice on studying abroad. Furthermore it informs about language courses in other European countries.

Applicants in all subject areas are eligible for scholarships for either a semester or a year. All applicants must be in at least their third semester of study when they apply.

Alongside German students can apply BAföG for a stay abroad.

Besides the DAAD offers special support programmes.

The programme Go East aims to interest German students in a study stay in Central, Southeast and East Europe as well as the countries of Commonwealth of Independent States.

In line with A New Passage to India study and research stays of German students, graduates and postdoctoral scientists in India are encouraged.

The PROMOS Programme awards scholarships for short stays abroad to German students.

Support programmes run by the EU

ERASMUS as a sectoral programme within the framework of the EU-education programme on lifelong learning concerns itself with higher education. It supports:

study terms at European universities outside Germany

students' placements at related institutions of higher education, centres of scientific research or enterprises in Europe.

Students interested in taking a study term at a European university outside Germany should apply directly at the European university, they wish to study at. For further information on application modalities please consult one of the International Offices of your German university.

 

The FREE-MOVER-Programme provides students the opportunity to take a study term at a European host university not taking part in the ERASMUS-Programme.

Support for Placement Abroad

Support of the DAAD

The German Academic Echange Service (DAAD) provides at its internet page Auslandspraktika information around a stay abroad related to practice. It offers German universities the possibility to provide for their students via the programme PROMOS special supplies of placements abroad. Further information about PROMOS is available at the International Offices.

Students who receive an interior BAföG promotion can apply an external BAföG promotion for their stay abroad related to practice. Particular information give the student union or the responsible BAföG-office.

Placement in Middle and Eastern Europe

The programme International Understanding at School of the Robert Bosch Foundation offers for students and graduates the possibility of placement at schools in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Ukraine, Byelorussia, Russian Federation, Georgia, Romania and Hungary for a couple of month. The student apprentices sit in on lectures, gain experience, get to know the other country and its pupils and initiate projects stimulating intercultural learning.

Placement in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South Eastern Europe

The ASA-Programme offers young people in the period of education the possibility of a three-month work and study stay in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South Eastern Europe. The participants work in an organisation on site at a project and find out other living environments. The following analysis conduces to exchange experiences and to get an increased awareness of global interrelations.

Placement at cultural Exchange Institutions

The Praktikumsführer offers placements for students in the field of Foreign Cultural Relations and International Cultural Policy.

Placement in the United States

The exchange programme US-Interns offers students of all disciplines from German and American universities the possibility to see life and work for time up to six month in the respectively other country.

Placement in International Organisations and EU Institutions

The Carlo Schmid Programme allows students and graduates in line with a placement to get to know problems and functions in the international administration and to extend its intercultural competence.

Placement for Special Branches of Study

Jurists

Trainees of jurisprudence and students during the one-level education for jurists could complete a part of their education at German Cambers of Commerce Abroad.

The European Law Students' Association (ELSA) offers for juridical students, trainees and young jurists temporary employment abroad with the STEP Trainee Exchange Programme.

Pedagogues

The Pedagogic Exchange Service (PAD) places entrant teachers of all sorts of schools as COMENIUS assistances in European foreign countries, student teachers on the school-subjects German, German as a foreign language, social studies, history and politics in line with the scholarship-programme International Understanding at School at host-schools in Central, Southeast and Eastern Europe, Kazakhstan and China as well as students of modern foreign languages and student teachers as teaching assistants on foreign languages at foreign educational institutions.

Medical Scientists

The German Medical Students' Association (bvmd) offers medical students registered in Germany a clinical clerkship abroad.

The International Federation of Medical Student’s Associations (IFMSA) organises exchange programmes for students of medical science.

The Dental Exchange Organisation (ZAD) places clinical clerkships abroad for entrant dentists.

Technical Study Courses

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is a trainee exchange organisation for students of natural and engineering science as well as the agriculture and sylviculture.

Economists

The organisation AIESEC offers students of economic and social sciences as well as related subjects the possibility to life and to work in another culture through a placement abroad.
