German Libraries Abroad

In many countries of the world the demand for German literature continues to outstrip supply. Therefore those German libraries abroad, like the libraries of the Goethe Institutes worldwide, which offer a general overview of literary and culturally related publications in Germany, play an important role in the intercultural dialogue with Germany.

French-German Partnerships

Partnerships of French and German libraries aim to work together to build an active information network among the different libraries.

This entails:

1. exchanging information and passing on queries

2. installing joint websites, organising joint projects, exhibitions, etc.

3. staff exchanges, sharing of experiences

4. librarians spending longer periods working at the partner library, or visiting on study excursions

5. exchanging holdings, making foreign-language publications available and linking donors/providers and receivers

6. Language courses for library staff members

The Bibliothèque Publique d’Information (BPI) of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek in Berlin concluded the first library partnership in February 2003.
