The German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) opened in 1988 and is dedicated to research in the fields of the arts and the humanities (like all other German centres in other countries active in this area (DFK Paris, DHI London, Moskau, Paris, Rom, Warschau, Washington and Orientinstitut Beirut/Istanbul).
With its research into the humanities and social and economic sciences relating to modern Japan, the DIJ intends to contribute to a deeper knowledge of modern Japanese culture, economy and society as well as Japanese-German relations.
The institute also contributes ideas on how practically to promote Japanese studies and research in Germany and support younger scholars in the field. For this purpose, the institute gives post-graduate scholarships and assists scholars with their study projects in Japan.
The institute has a specialised library with publications in German on Japanese subjects. The library keeps in touch with international academia and assists young scientists. The internet database "Special Collections in Japanese University Libraries" provides researchers and librarians with online data-recall facilities to more than 700 special collections in 140 Japanese University libraries.
The DIJ does not only co-operate with Japanese instutitons and scholars, but sees itself as a local centre for Japanese studies which networks closely with similar institutions around the globe.
The DIJ organises numerous international conferences and symposia on its priority study subjects.
