The German Historical Institute in Rome (DHI Rome) is an independent research institution and mandated by the foundation German Institutes of Humanities Abroad (DGIA). It was established for the research of Italian and German history and, in particular, German-Italian relations from the early Middle Ages to the present day.
Activities:
organising symposia, colloquia and public lectures,
granting PhD scholarships and organising an annual ‘Rome Course’,
assisting German professors, students and historical institutions with research projects,
cooperating with Italian historians / historical institutes.
The Institute has a musicology department which focuses on the relations between German and Italian music, their respective historical sources and development and their repercussions throughout Europe.
In addition, the institute publishes the journal Quellen und Forschungen aus italienischen Archiven und Bibliotheken (Sources and Research Results from Italian Archives and Libraries), one serial and various other publications.
The Historical Library holds circa 200.000 volumes and 1030 magazine subscriptions; the music library holds circa 45.000 volumes and 375 magazines.
