The DVV groups the regional Adult Education Colleges in Germany and runs a head office and a number of institutions to support its members and carry out the duties of the association, funded by membership fees from the regional associations. The work of the DVV and its institutions is subsidised through special-purpose government and government agency funds (from the Foreign Office and the ministries BMBF, BMFSFJ, BMI, BMZ), the federal states, the EU and other public sources.
The Association promotes adult education, further education and general educational at the Adult Education Colleges and represents the interests of the regional associations at national (federal) level, in particular by
promoting co-operation and sharing of experience among its members
developing principles and guidelines
representing education in general and the work of the association in particular at government level
promoting the quality of adult education in Germany
promoting international co-operation in the field

The Adolf Grimme Institute belongs to the small circle of renowned European research and development services which deal with media policies and the culture of communication. The Adolf Grimme Institute is involved in theoretical and practical media education and focuses on observing, analysing and evaluating media products/services and developments. In addition, the insti-tute is active in the transfer of professional expertise and knowledge between different groups of society.
The institute also awards the Adolf Grimme Prize, endowed by the German Association of Adult Education Colleges (DVV) and regarded as the highest distinction for quality television productions in Germany, as well as the Grimme Online Award for outstanding internet sites.
