Church Development Service (EED)

Pupose/Activities:

The EED is a merger of and substitute for the organisations Dienste in Übersee (DÜ, Services Overseas), Evangelische Zentralstelle für Entwicklungshilfe (EZE), Kirchlicher Entwicklungsdients (KED, Church Development Service), Ökumenisch-Missionarischer Weltdienst (ÖMW, Global Ecumenical Missionary Service), Evangelisches Missionswerk (EMW, Protestant Mission Service) and Ausschuß für entwicklungsbezogene Bildung und Publizistik (ABP, Committee for developmental Education and Publishing). As per 1 January 2003, the Ökumenisches Studienwerk (ÖSW, Ecumenical Student Service) will also be integrated into the EED.

The EED

supports the development work of Protestant Christian churches and organisations as well as private operators with money, personal involvement and expert advice. In this global partnership, the EED contributes to building a just society.

has stepped up its endeavours for peace and conflict resolution and co-manages the working group for peace and development called 'FriEnt' (abbreviation of 'Frieden und Entwicklung')

funds development programmes run by partner organisations in the Third World (i.e. does not carry out its own overseas projects)

offers a reintegration programme of support to professionals from the southern hemisphere who have lived and worked in Germany for some time and now wish to return home to apply their skills

supports development specialists from the southern hemisphere who wish to apply their professional experience with us in the North (organisational framework: 'Ökumenische Dienste in Deutschland'/Ecumenical Services in Germany)

promotes educational programmes like seminars and ecumenical study trips, campaigns and media broadcasts/publication via its programme of 'Action, Education and Publishing'

sponsors, in particular, the production of feature and documentary films and distributes them through its Evangelisches Zentrum für entwicklungsbezogene Filmarbeit EZEF (Protestant centre for films focusing on questions of development) in Stuttgart to the 'Protestant media centres for educational work' which then process orders from schools and church communities.

In mid-2002, the EED and the Protestant relief organisation Brot für die Welt (Bread for the World) concluded a co-operation agreement. The legal structure is to be established in 2003.

Together with Brot für die Welt and the Deutsche Kommission Justitia et Pax, the EED forms the joint conference for Kirche und Entwicklung (GKKE, Church and Development) which has an office in Berlin.
