This Foundation was endowed in 1931 by the Hamburg businessman and farmer Dr honoris causa Alfred Toepfer. The foundation's aim has been to promote European unity in cultural diversity, and understanding between the peoples of Europe.
The interests from the endowment capital are used to fund the administration and the following priority subjects and areas of the Foundation:
Europe (European unity, integration of central and eastern European countries)
culture and science (the humanities, literature, music, art, folk traditions, architecture, monument preservation)
nature protection (devel-opment of protective activities and structures, agriculture and forestry, town and country planning, ecology)
youth (grants/scholarships, camps, seminars, conferences, school excursions)
The Foundation limits its activities to Europe and concentrates on its own programme, mainly of awarding prizes for outstanding performance in the above listed fields.
