AFS Intercultural Programmes

Purpose/Activities

The name of this organisation is the new title of the former American Field Service. The new registered welfare organisation with seventy-eight local committees and roughly 1,200 volunteer co-workers who are dedicated to assisting and organising programmes for young people. The association is part of a network of independent AFS partner organisations in almost sixty countries around the world. The headquarters of the organisation, AFS Intercultural Programs, Inc., is in New York.

Volunteer Services with AFS:

Community Service

This programme is open to all those who, on leaving school, have not yet started or completed their professional training, or to students seeking to ac-quire practical experience, wishing to volunteer for services benefiting the community.

Apart from volunteer work in various community projects (mostly for six months), this service includes the main elements of most AFS programmes, i.e. an introductory seminar in the host country, language courses (except in English-speaking countries), accompanying workshops and preparation for the project work, accommodation and board with host families for the dura-tion of the volunteer service, visits to social functions and cultural events, preparatory and subsequent review sessions during weekend meetings in Germany.

EVS European Voluntary Service

The EVS is a promotion programme funded by the European Union, which offers young people volunteer field engagements in public welfare projects - social, ecological or cultural - abroad for six-month periods (extension possi-ble).

The programme is fully funded by the EU, the volunteer service and the hosting project organisers. It is designed to support young people, who could otherwise not afford to do voluntary work.

AFS partners EVS in both finding and sending out volunteers and in hosting them in the field, mainly in European countries.

The EVS only offers a limited number of volunteer jobs; applicants are sometimes accepted and deployed at short notice.

Application deadlines: 15 February and 15 August.

Once accepted, vol-unteers may also apply for partial grants from the AFS grant endowment which is funded by donations and the AFS' own budget. Sole deciding factor is the financial situation of the volunteer's family. Application forms are sent out together with the volunteer agreement.
