Purpose/Activities

According to the agreement signed on 19 May 1992 by the representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America, The Rias Berlin Commission promotes the two countries' exchange of persons and information in the field of radio journalism.

The commission has ten members: five German and five US citizens. The Fed-eral German State Minister and Commissioner for Culture and the Media as well as the American Ambassador are both honorary commission members.

RIAS activities in detail:

Every year the Rias Ber-lin Commission organises several two- to four-week information programmes for German radio journalists in the United States, and for their American colleagues in Germany. Up to fifty places are offered every year. These transatlantic ex-changes are supplemented by conferences, seminars and meetings with former fellows.

Funding of radio and television productions which contribute to mutual understanding between the people of the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America.

Annual awarding of prizes to German and American radio and television broadcasts and related internet sites that contribute in a special way to understanding between the two countries and have not yet been subsidised by the Commission.
