Stiftung Mercator, named after the cartographer and humanist Gerhard Mercator (1512-1594), was founded 1996. It initiates and supports projects improving facilities in the school education and higher education sector as well as it develops solutions to improve educational facilities in these respective fields. Special concern of Stiftung Mercator's work is to promote the exchange of knowledge between people with different national, cultural and social background in order to support their personal development, to encourage personal commitment and to enable people taking full advantage of opportunities. The Foundation supports a peaceful coexistence.
It aims
to enhance the sense of responsibility and fantasy as creative power for social advancement,
to further the creativity of the decision-makers and the ideas of engaged people,
to initiate future-oriented projects itself and together with its partners,
to define standards of transparency and quality for the actions of its own and that of its partners.
Stiftung Mercator provides funding for projects taht fall in one of the following three centres of competence:
education, and
and that animate the idea of cosmopolitanism and tolerance via intercultural meetings and motivate the exchange of knowledge and culture.
Project funding by Stiftung Mercator focuses on three thematic clusters
climate change and
in all three centres of competence.
Stiftung Mercator implements its own projects and provides funding for external projects.
