The Academy represents German literature at home and abroad and works for the preservation and appropriate use of the German language in art and science, in public and private use.
Activities in detail:
distinguishing significant works of literature (e.g. with the Georg Büchner Prize, the most reputed German literature award) and promoting them in other ways
publishing works that are valuable in terms of cultural history or linguistics, but are not commercially viable propositions for publishers
taking position on questions of intellectual life in every possible appropriate form
dealing with language teaching at all types of schools
networking with 'like-minded' societies and instiutions at home and abroad
Activities relating to foreign countries:
organising conferences abroad
networking with foreign members on all five continents
sending copies of Academy publications to numerous libraries around the world
