Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina

Purpose/Activities

The German Academy of Nature Explorers Leopoldina sees itself as an association of scholars and academic experts in the fields of natural science and medicine. It is based in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also has international influence as roughly a third of its members live and work in other countries. Its statutory task is 'according to its tradition the promotion of international research co-operation for the benefit of mankind and nature, e.g. through scientific colloquia, publication of findings, maintenance of a specialised archive and scientific library, as well as by endowing distinctions and awards, e.g. to further young scientists'.

As a classical academy, the Leopoldina does not run its own research institutes. Its activities are carried out by its members and depend on their commitment and expertise shared with others during conferences, panel discussions, etc. and through publications.
