Purpose/Activities

 

The Japan Foundation is an independent administrative institution that is specialised in international cultural exchange in Japan. It consists of a head office located in Tokyo, a branch office in Kyoto, two Japanese-language institutes (Urawa and Kansai), and 23 overseas offices situated in 21 countries.

 

The Japan Foundation’s main tasks are:

arts and cultural exchange programmes to enhance mutual understanding among countries throughout the world,

assistance of Japanese-language education in ways such as dispatching specialists to overseas Japanese educational organisations and training local Japanese-language teachers,

support of Japanese studies overseas and promotion of intellectual exchange between Japan and other countries.

The Japan Foundation Information Centre is a site for information gathering and research on Japanese culture and international exchange, as well as the networking by people interested in these fields. It is located in the headquarter of the Japan Foundation and features a library and a lounge area used for symposiums and conferences.
