The Ibero-American Institute belonging to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation promotes the scientific and cultural exchange between Germany and Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. The institute’s three pillars are: research centre, information centre and cultural centre, and it hosts the largest library in Europe specialized in the Ibero-American region.

 

The library collections include:

830,000 volumes (priority areas: social sciences, humanities and geography, economics and law),

special collections on law, parlamentaria, newspapers as well as Latino Studies, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG),

32,000 journals (therefrom 4,700 current publications),

an extensive collection of rare texts on microfiche, microfilm and online databases,

a map collection with 69,000 maps,

26,000 records, tapes or CDs as well as 2,000 videos and DVDs,

a slide and photo collection with 2,600 posters, placards and other graphic works,

a press archive with approx. 350,000 newspaper articles,

more than 300 bequests with documents and material out of the areas ethnology, archaeology, geography, history and literature.
